Safe
on the road
New Zealand road and climatic conditions make
Motorhome travel an ideal and often idyllic way to see the country.
Unlike a large continent, you do not have to go far to experience
untouched untamed countryside.
Nowhere else in the world can you have so much solitude with nature
without isolation
The
national highways are superior and all the main attractions and
fringes of the wildest regions can be reached by road.
In many regions sealed highways run right through dramatic scenery.
Minor roads may be only covered by gravel - these are much slower
to drive
With
common sense caution and excellent back up service - you have
nothing to fear.
Here's a few tips:
- Check
with us for the time required to travel to the places of your
choice
- Fill
up on petrol before it gets too low, as distances between
petrol stations can be considerable (especially in the South
Island.)
- Keep
up to date maps handy
- Monitor
weather and road conditions. Call us if you're not sure
- On country
roads, particularly at night, watch for wandering farm stock
- Avoid
driver fatigue. Take regular two hour breaks and avoid driving
more than 5 hours a day
- Never
exceed 60 km/h on unsealed or gravel roads
The
Interisland Ferry
Driving by Motorhome or Car rental between the
North and South Island on the Interislander is one of the easiest
ways to travel.
Simply drive on, drive off and continue on your way.
Climate
Seasons are the opposite of those in Europe and
North America. Spring is from September to November; Summer -
December to February; Autumn - March to May; Winter - June to
August.
The marine climate is mainly mild, with extremes experienced in
some regions sheltered by mountain ranges, or more exposed to
winds.
Even so, there are few places where day temperatures exceed 35°
in summer or lower than 10° in winter
