Driving an RV / Motorhome / Campervan in Germany

In Germany the minimum age of a driver is 17 years but there will be age restrictions applicable to RVs / Motorhomes / Campervans. Children must be at least 12 years of age to sit in the front seat and younger ones must sit in the rear with a seat belt.

All vehicles must carry a warning triangle, including RVs / Motorhomes / Campervans. Seat belts must be worn, front and rear. All RV / Motorhome / Campervans in Germany must be equipped with a first-aid kit and spare bulbs are required.

Your RV / Motorhome / Campervan in Germany may not break the land speed record but to avoid fines you must observe the speed limits: 50 km/h (30 mph) in built-up areas; 100 km/h (62 mph) or 130 km/h (81 mph) outside built-up areas; a recommended 130 km/h (81 mph) on the Autobahn (Freeways / Motorway). Automatic cameras are used extensively to catch traffic violators.

International sections of the Autobahn are signified by green rectangles bearing an "E"; while the letter "A" is used to signify international sections of the Autobahn (Freeways / Motorway). National roads are marked by black numbers on a yellow background.

The roads in the former West Germany are extremely well engineered and maintained. Responses to emergencies are very well planned and executed.

Camping in Germany

Campsites in Germany are generally very well equipped and have lots of amenities, often including excellent restaurants. Generally sites cannot be reserved. Free-camping is allowed for one night at highway rest areas, but it's illegal elsewhere unless you have the permission of the owner of the property.

*Be especially careful when setting off from service stations or restaurants on the left side of the road.

* Take care when overtaking - allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead.

* Germany has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood - stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.8.

* Seat belts front and rear are obligatory everywhere.

* Speed limits are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent in Germany, and heavy on-the-spot fines can be levied.

* Remember - Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to on-the-spot fines.

* There are no tolls to pay on German Autobahns (Freeways / Motorway).
