Germany existed as a single state between 1871 and 1945, and from 1989 onwards. Before 1871, it was a region of small, independent kingdoms. Because of this history, there is much variety to be had within Germany’s regions, providing a rich experience for the traveller. Hiring a Motorhome or RV is a great way of getting around and exploring the different regions of Germany at your own pace.

Berlin is Germany’s capital and home of bohemia, with a unique history as a former divided city during the Cold War era. Cultural highlights abound, including museums and concert venues. Remnants of the Berlin Wall have been preserved.

Bavaria, in the south, features stunning beauty, fascinating castles and monasteries, mountains and lakes, and the famous Oktoberfest.

The city of Bamberg offers many historic sites and its local specialty, Rauchbier, or smoked beer.

Munich has much historic architecture, many museums and a vibrant art scene. It also features many traditional breweries.

Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia has many restaurants, coffee shops and beer gardens. It features much historic architecture and cathedrals.

Frankfurt is a thriving financial centre with many museums and other cultural activities.

When on your Motorhome or RV vacation, remember to observe speed limits and blood alcohol limits, which are strictly enforced in Germany.

Stuttgart is known for its cuisine and many historic styles of architecture on display in its main square.

The Black Forest is known for its scenery, the Black Forest Gateau, cuckoo clocks and has inspired a great deal of mythology. A Motorhome holiday is a great way to visit the area.

The university town of Freiburg was accidentally bombed by German planes in World War II and has since been restored to its former glory. It features much historic architecture and its own unique regional cuisine.

Hamburg features magnificent architecture and a historic harbour.

Heidelberg has a world-famous castle, and a beautiful old town centre.

The former German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, is home to Communist architecture, the 3000 lakes of Brandenburg, Gothic architecture and the cities of Dresden and Leipzig. Natural attractions include mountains with spectacular cliff formations, heath and marshlands. Be sure to include this area in your Motorhome holiday.

Leipzig has many cultural and historical highlights. Mendelssohn, Bach and Luther all made their homes here.

Thuringia is known for its thermal springs. It has many wellness resorts and hiking trails. The scenery of the Rhine Valley has inspired many poems and paintings. It features hiking trails, cathedrals, castles forests and vineyards. It is a popular destination for visitors, and will be a highlight on any Motorhome or campervan holiday.

The Ruhr Valley was Germany’s industrial powerhouse and coal mining region from the Industrial Revolution onwards. Much of this history has been retained, while many former industrial sites have been converted to cultural centres.

The North Sea and the Baltic Sea are favourite holiday destinations. The area features natural scenery, beaches, fishing and sleepy rural towns.

Driving in Germany with a campervan or 4WD is made easier by Germany’s Autobahns. Drivers on a Motorhome or RV holiday should be careful to keep to all posted speeds limits and drive on the right. All road rules are strictly enforced.

Motorhome / RV / Campervan Hire In Germany

RV / Motorhome / Campervan rentals in Germany can be considerably less expensive than many other countries in Europe. As well as offering many destinations you could start and end your Motorhome / RV / Campervan tour in Germany and visit Scandinavia (now much more accessible, via a bridge between Copenhagen, Denmark, and Sweden), Eastern Europe, Greece, Italy and France.

Germany is in central Europe with many cosmopolitan cities - Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Koln, Nurenburg and Heidelberg. Enjoy Germany's finest food & beverages, beautiful Bavaria, historical towns and the Rhine Valley.

An RV / Motorhome / Campervan, in Germany known as Wohnmobiles, Campmobiles or Reisemobiles, is an ideal way to see the country and enjoy your vacation. With your own beds and kitchen you don't have to worry about an itinerary - just go as you please.

If you rent an RV / Motorhome / Campervan in Germany, manufactured by companies like Hymes, Burstnes, Dethleff, Eura Mobil or Tabbert, you can be assured that it will be modern, well equipped, reliable and clean. You will be given instructions to drive the RV / Motorhome / Campervan but you may want to start your vacation preparation with the following:

Driving an RV / Motorhome / Campervan in Germany

In Germany the minimum age of a driver is 17 years but there will be age restrictions applicable to RVs / Motorhomes / Campervans. Children must be at least 12 years of age to sit in the front seat and younger ones must sit in the rear with a seat belt.

All vehicles must carry a warning triangle, including RVs / Motorhomes / Campervans. Seat belts must be worn, front and rear. All RV / Motorhome / Campervans in Germany must be equipped with a first-aid kit and spare bulbs are required.

Your RV / Motorhome / Campervan in Germany may not break the land speed record but to avoid fines you must observe the speed limits: 50 km/h (30 mph) in built-up areas; 100 km/h (62 mph) or 130 km/h (81 mph) outside built-up areas; a recommended 130 km/h (81 mph) on the Autobahn (Freeways / Motorway). Automatic cameras are used extensively to catch traffic violators.

International sections of the Autobahn are signified by green rectangles bearing an "E"; while the letter "A" is used to signify international sections of the Autobahn (Freeways / Motorway). National roads are marked by black numbers on a yellow background.

The roads in the former West Germany are extremely well engineered and maintained. Responses to emergencies are very well planned and executed.

Drivers in Germany are generally very good and well disciplined which makes driving an RV / Motorhome / Campervan in Germany easier than in some other countries.

Camping in Germany

Campsites in Germany are generally very well equipped and have lots of amenities, often including excellent restaurants. Generally sites cannot be reserved. Free-camping is allowed for one night at highway rest areas, but it's illegal elsewhere unless you have the permission of the owner of the property.

Make sure you Drive Alive! Drive on the Right!

*Be especially careful when setting off from service stations or restaurants on the left side of the road.

* Take care when overtaking - allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead.

* Germany has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood - stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.8.

* Seat belts front and rear are obligatory everywhere.

* Speed limits are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent in Germany, and heavy on-the-spot fines can be levied.

* Remember - Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to on-the-spot fines.

* There are no tolls to pay on German Autobahns (Freeways / Motorway).
