"At Châteauneuf du Pape we are proud to have been making wine since time immemorial !
The culture attached to the vine is extremely ancient in Provence.
Over twenty six centuries ago the Celts and the Ligurians were making wine, albeit in a rudimentary fashion it must be said!

The known part of the history of our village starts in the middle ages, at this time we belonged to ...the German Emperor Friedrich the 1st (Frederick the Redbeard).
Redbeard did not get on with the Pope, but he was forced to make some concessions (before going on to publicly humiliate himself) and in 1157 signed a charter making a variety of donations to the Church.
Châteauneuf (at the time not "du Pape") was one of these donations. The development of the vine fields can be attributed to Pope Jean XXII.
He also arranged the building of the castle which now stands in ruins. When the Popes returned to Rome the county remained a papal possession until the French revolution.
